Yalumba The Caley Cabernet & Shiraz 2021

A profound moment in Australian wine, and the coming of age of Yalumba's flagship project - The Caley. 100 points. The greatest ever wine Yalumba has released, and in our humble opinion, a much greater and long-term proposition than Penfolds Grange.

Tasting Notes

Very deep and dense red in colour. Stunningly inviting perfume of blackcurrants, rose petals, iodine, violets, fine spices, dried herbs and cedary tones. This truly epitomises the distinct character of Coonawarra and the unique essence of The Caley. Shiraz fruit merges with Cabernet Sauvignon delivering a long, silken and seamless palate with a fine, powdery tannin profile.

Product Highlights

The Caley is the pinnacle of a long winemaking journey of excellence, that rightfully honours one of Yalumba’s most adventurous sons. A blend of Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon and Barossa Shiraz, The Caley is a classic marriage of two noble varieties and two great Australian wine regions.

The evolution of Yalumba’s iconic The Caley in just a few short years, has been nothing short of remarkable. In a bid to mimic the most illustrious Cabernet & Shiraz blends of Penfolds (think Bin 60A), Yalumba have finally unearthed a Grand Vin to compete alongside the likes of Henschke’s Hill of Grace, Grange & Runrig as one of Australia’s most cherished and sort after wines.

It’s a multi-regional blend, taking the powerful and thunderous Coonawarra Cabernet (71%) and blending it with some of Yalumba’s most cherished old-vine Shiraz in the Eden Valley. Imagine 1st Growth Bordeaux power, with the elegance of Hermitage thrown in for good measure, add the quintessential Aussie tannins and intensity, and your on your way. This is world-class wine, no doubt about it.

The 2021 The Caley has just notched up another momentous score too, with 100 points from Tyson Stelzer, to sit alongside a bevy of other near-perfect scores. In the new Wine Companion regime, where the scores have all been thoroughly paired back from previous editions, The Caley was one of only a handful of Australian wines to score the illustrious top mark. At $399, it’s also the best priced.

But the review that positions the new found legacy of Yalumba’s The Caley best is from international critic Matthew Jukes. He recently tasted through the entire Bordeaux En Primeur campaign, and not once did he score a wine a perfect 100 point score, yet that is what he awarded the 2021 The Caley shortly after.
If you want a cellaring prospect to reward yourself of generations to come, look no further.
