A terrific Coal River Valley chardonnay from a winemaker with one of the best laughs in the business, Peter Caldwell. Pale straw with pure tones of grapefruit, citrus, white nectarine and peach fruits with hints of gentle spice, grilled cuts, meadow flowers, lemon curd, light cashew oak, crushed stone and almond paste. A light struck-flint tone seamlessly floats through on the palate. The focus is tight, with a minerally cadence and a long draw of citrus and nectarine on the exit.

An away game in Coal River Valley here. Clatters around the palate with crunch and swerve, a trill of briny minerality and some chalky elements, alongside a cavalcade of lime, green apple, some kohlrabi and radish notes, a little ginger biscuit and sweet spice. It feels even, reserved and elegant. Refreshing and sleek too. A crispness and coolness. A little gloss of spice lingers. A fine wine.

The 2024 Coal River Valley Chardonnay is a wine of contrasts: firm phenolic structure underpinned by bright, laser-like acidity. The fruit here is on the stone-fruit spectrum, and while pretty, it takes a backseat to the structure and shape of the wine. It's almost acerbic (sharp, forthright) in its countenance. 13% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.
