Tasting Notes

The Carillion Vineyard is situated on the volcanic slope of Mt Canobolas in the Orange region. Our top Orange region Shiraz, this wine imparts many of the classic cool climate Shiraz characteristics, while retaining a unique personality of its own. Hints of spice and tobacco accompany powerful fruit flavours on the palate, while subtle red fruits provide an elegant nose. This wine can be enjoyed now, but will benefit from extended cellaring.

Product Highlights

This is a seriously impressive cool-climate Shiraz from Orange, grown on the volcanic slopes of Mount Canobolas.

The 2024 Carillion Reserve Shiraz was awarded 97 points by The Wine Collective tasting panel, making it the highest-scoring wine our panel has ever reviewed. For a panel known for careful, conservative scoring, that is no small thing.

Medium-bodied, elegant and beautifully composed, it shows dark berries, cherry, red fruits, white pepper, violets and subtle savoury spice. There’s also a gentle thread of tobacco and earthy complexity, giving the wine extra depth without weighing it down.

What really sets it apart is the texture. It has the concentration and persistence of a much bigger wine, but the palate stays silky, precise and lifted. Bright acidity gives the wine shape, while fine, dusty tannins carry the fruit through a long, polished finish.

Made from a south-facing block at around 800 metres elevation on free-draining volcanic loams, this is Orange Shiraz at its most compelling. It’s drinking beautifully now, though it has the balance and structure to reward careful cellaring.

A smart, elegant and deeply satisfying Shiraz from one of the most exciting cool-climate regions in the country.
