Product Highlights
Some wines flirt with greatness. The 2024 Coleraine went all the way.
This is the 40th release from Te Mata Estate, first poured back in 1982, and the wine that helped put Hawke’s Bay on the map as a serious Cabernet region. Four decades on, it feels like everything has aligned. A warm, dry summer on the Gimblett Gravels delivered more than 25 days above 30°C, with small bunches and naturally lower yields. Then a cooler March stepped in, holding the acidity and allowing picking at just the right moment. As Steve Smith MW said at the time, 2024 offered the chance to be exceptional. Coleraine may be the clearest proof.
The blend stays true to its Bordeaux roots - 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot and 11% Cabernet Franc, matured in 55% new French oak. In the glass it is structured and layered, yet beautifully composed. James Suckling called out its ultra-fine, velvety tannins and seamless, cashmere texture. It has depth and quiet power, the sort of wine that will unfurl slowly over 20 years or more in the cellar, but it is already polished enough to tempt the impatient.
The critics have spoken with rare unity. 100 points from Wine Orbit, who described it as a masterpiece. 98 from James Suckling. 98 from Huon Hooke. 97+ from Gary Walsh. It is the first Coleraine ever to reach 100 points - a milestone for a label long considered New Zealand’s greatest red.
Iconic, benchmark and highly collectable, this 40th vintage arrives in its signature wooden box and feels every bit the statement release. If you have been waiting for the Coleraine to tuck away and talk about in a decade’s time, this looks like the one.
