The adjectives get a real work out with this little beauty, but suffice to say that is one tightly layered, complex, energy-driven, totally delicious youngster. Brings together all the class you might expect from Mornington Peninsula’s signature red grape with a vibrancy that entices. Dusty red cherry, cranberry, leaf, potpourri, rose and gentle spices light up the scent. It’s a most welcoming introduction and, from there, it moves into a beautifully expressive palate lit up in aromatics with a touch of violet and delivered with nicely judged oak. Acidity runs bright through the finish.

Still firm and tight with aromas and flavours of whole bunches, so it’s quite stemmy/sappy and tart with brisk acidity and sinewy tannins. Definitely fresh and perky. This needs food to tame the overt characters today, or more time in the cellar.

Bottles are maybe a bit too heavy given the message of sustainable viticulture on the back label. Anyway, a minor quibble. Red fruit, cherry, quite a lot of stalky minty things here too, a lick of cedar oak. It’s a bright and tangy wine, strawberry and orange, sour cherry, a bit spicy, has some emery board tannin, but gee, it’s a bit pinchy and herbal for me with an amaro and citrus peel bitterness and brown sugar closing on a finish of solid length. Structure is good, pleasure is lacking. Too bony and austere.
