The Chardonnay used here was formerly the fruit which went into the old Brands Laira Chardy. Free run juice only before fermentation in stainless steel, finished in oak, and then a year maturing on lees in a combination of French oak puncheons from different coopers. The final wine is a barrel selection, with 500 dozen made. Deep yellow hue with flecks of green, the nose reveals the richness found throughout this wine. We have notes of melon, stone fruit, jasmine and peaches, with a hint of almondy oak. Still youthful, there is serious persistence here, with some crunchy acidity and a gentle, lingering finish. Three to five years.

For the white wine drinker who revels in the cadence of alliteration, Coonawarra Chardonnay is for you. Rolling off the tongue, literally, with generosity and balance. Notes of honeydew, flamé peach, dehydrated apple, and roasted chestnut unfold with purpose. A creamy glycerol texture coats the palate, sharpened by a pop of acid that brings the finish into focus. There is a subtle vanilla smokiness that trails the finish of a wine with depth and quiet force. Coonawarra Can Chardonnay.

Subtle aromas of cinnamon, apple and just-ripe white nectarine lead the way, followed by layers of lemon butter, peach skin and cashew cream. There’s richness here, but it’s measured and controlled. The medium-bodied palate turns up the volume, with creamy butter and cashew notes front and centre, joined by peach, cedar and a touch of toast. Chewy phenolics lend shape and textural grip through the finish. A bolder, more unctuous style of Chardonnay—ideal for those who enjoy the fuller, toastier expression.
