Fresh beetroot juice, fragrant lemon thyme, blood plum and floral flecks fill the glass, evolving and opening further with time. A rich core of dark savoury fruit provides depth and intensity. The core of blood plum and purple fig is complexed with earthy warm spice and subtle savoury oak. The tannins build and grow, providing a robust frame and depth to the palate. It's wonderfully expressed on the nose with dark fruit intensity, violet, clove and cedar characters, followed by a succulent palate offering plump mouthfeel and fleshy texture. Splendidly harmonious and lingering with rich fruit flavours with spicy nuances, finishing complex and delicious.

Saperavi is always so heady. It's got this talcy, mineral salt leading tone before sliding into a luscious array of blueberry, boysenberry and mulberry fruit notes. It's a pretty appealing wine this. Instantly likeable, I guess you could say, with its super juicy fruit profile, layers of exotic spice, blueberry-pie-like vibes and toothsome but chalky tannin architecture. Jeez it's good drinking.

Dense and generous as Saperavi should be, the core of this Arila Gardens release is saturated, but it's not as weighty as its predecessor. There is still plenty here to embrace, don't get me wrong, I just preferred the 2022. Think purple flowers, blueberry compote and stewed mulberries to get things underway. Add some plums, blackberries, drunken cherries, black tea, dried herbs, licorice, cedar and dark chocolate and you have quite a wine. Brick dust tannins coat the palate with a respectable sign off. A generous glass beside a roast beef is where this wants to be. Drink to five years+
