The Story: In my musings and trying to make sense of the last
few years I can across a word that struck me and which I felt
was wholly appropriate for these challenging times. The word
is ‘Respair’.
‘Respair’ is an old English word that went out of common usage
in the 15th century. A clear variation of ‘despair’ and
abreives from the latin ‘sperare’ (to hope). The opposite of
despair is to repair, to have fresh hope, and to move beyond
the gloom of desolation and despondency and have faith in the
future. Despair is to see no light at the end of the tunnel
while respair maintains that the light at the end of the
tunnel will return after darkness. Making wine helps me see
this. Seasons keep coming, there is always winter dormancy,
green shoots of spring and inevitably an autumn harvest.
Together with nature, we create wine and enhance the lives of
ourselves and of others.
