Back in 1435, Graf (Count) Johann IV von Katzenelenbogen unknowingly made history. At his behest, 22 vines of a brand-new white grape variety were planted—Riesling.

His legacy still echoes through the Rheingau, often called "Riesling’s cradle", where the variety continues to thrive. Grown on shale and alluvial soils along the banks of the Rhine, under a mild, almost Mediterranean climate, Riesling found its perfect home.

Winemaking in this region dates back to monastic farms of the early Middle Ages, and centuries later, Riesling remains one of the world’s greatest white wines—all thanks to Johann IV’s bold decision nearly 600 years ago.
