Glossy golden colour and plenty going on. The perfume is dense and honeyed but the wine has a savoury profile with chewy bitterness and much more to uncover. Toasted spices, cumin, anise, and coriander seeds. Red apple, brown pear, quince. There are waxy and woolly elements in this wine too. In texture, it’s hazelnut skins, with minty coolness and ginger warmth. This is a rich, characterful wine with layers that come together to impress.

The Turbul range explores Italian varieties with Quealy’s riobolla gialla planted in ’18, and this is the second rendition. Fruit harvested in mid-autumn, spends six months on skins in amphora and then pressed to used oak for about three years. This amber wine is indeed amber-hued yet bright, full of savoury flavours and autumn fruit, think poached quinces and Bramley’s Seedling apples with ginger, toast with butter and honeycomb. There’s a pleasing salted lemon and grilled nuts flavour, too, with phenolics so well-handled and acidity keeping this buoyant. A complex style, it needs food and is delicious.
