This is very structured for a 2022, with fine, linear tannins that run the length of the wine, giving backbone, focus and a tight fruit structure. It’s very typical for a Central Otago pinot. So much clarity and focus to this.

Biodynamically farmed, Bendigo-born pinot noir. Bright ruby in the glass with aromas of dark cherry and plum fruits veiled with hints of exotic spice, crushed schist, wildflowers, thyme, fennel tops, dried shiitake, dried meats and earth. Purely fruited with a dry, savoury travel across the palate, powdered by a fine, mineral-laden acidity and fine, powdered, schisty tannins. The finish shows abundant energy, complexity and regional verve.

The trio of vintages were across 2020, 2021 and 2022. 2021 is a classic vintage, and 2020 was warm. “The 2020s are immediately engaging. For me, the 2022s could be potentially exceptional,” says Winemaker Rudi Bauer. The 2022 Single Vineyard Pinot Noir nose is electric, with blood orange and brine, cherry pip and raspberry, cranberry and caper berry. In the mouth, the wine is energetic and spicy, with a long spool of tannin and fruit entwined through the finish. It’s floral and bloody as well. It’s an utterly lovely and wonderful wine with a super pleasant aftertaste that lingers. 14% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

Vinous

The 2022 Pinot Noir is already approachable, with sweet ripe fruit and almost sticky tannins that coat the palate. Gentle acidity flows on the savory finish, which evokes licorice, white smoke and tea leaves. Low yields ensured good concentration in 2022.

The 2022 Pinot Noir Bendigo is initially supple and tender, with ripe plum and cherry fruit sitting alongside smoky, vanilla oak characters. It displays moderate concentration and a sense of firmness from both acidity and puppy dog grippy tannins on the finish that need a couple more years to shake off their youthful enthusiasm. The 2022 finishes with medium length, redolent of Oolong tea and plum fruit.
