Generously concentrated and beautifully integrated wine with plentiful blackberry, blackcurrant, fruits, fine slinky/ chocolaty, hint a dente/ bittersweet tannins, superb mid-palate volume, some inky complexity, lovely mocha/ espresso oak notes and fresh long juicy acidity. "Blend of cabernet sauvignon and shiraz (51/49%) sourced from vineyards in McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley and Padthaway. Matured for 12 months in American hogsheads (33% new). Coming back to this Australian battler after Penfold's Napa and Bordeaux trials was something of a rude shock in the first instance. This is big, bold, beautiful and quintessentially Australian. It makes no apologies for its wealth of black fruits, almost succulent tannins, and vanillin oak."

Penfolds "Baby Grange" is in fine form for the 2022 release and, for me, sits at the confluence of both traditional and contemporary winemaking. Its cellaring track record is outstanding and I think this release will age beautifully thanks to its classic structure and impressive fruit depth. It's all dark plum and berry with a sheen of mahogany, sweet oak spice, cigar lounge, milk chocolate, dried cranberry and pressed violets. Layered and filigreed with compact fine-grained tannins and a sense of grace and poise as it slowly sails off. It's a ripper.
