Dark purple, bright rim. Black cherry, violets, clove, olives and smoked nuts. Mulberry, blackberry, blueberry, marzipan. Lush body, brisk and assertive, tension on the palate, fine length. Fruity tannin, cracked spice, and toasty oak complement the smooth delivery. Juicy and savoury with dark fruits, iron and cedar notes, hardy herbs and a whiff of eucalyptus. Traditional McLaren Vale Shiraz flavour but with a modern, bright chord, kind of cool. A maritime, regional style, showing good individual personality from each of the six vineyard blocks, still all in ensemble together with nice balance and chord.

We especially chose six separate blocks for this regional, modern Shiraz. Breakneck Creek Elliott Block (planted 1994), Sand Road Block 3 (planted 2014), Sand Road Block 1 (planted 2001), McLaren Hills Block 4 Stock (planted 2001), Hillenvale Dashwood Block (planted 2018), and Stradz Block 1, Oakley Road (planted 1990). These blocks are all in the Eastern foothills of McLaren Vale. Geology is Kurrajong Landslide, Talus Slope, Kurrajong Formation (Breakneck, McLaren Hills, Oakley Rd) Christies Beach Formation (Sand Road) and Burra Formation at Kangarilla (Hillenvale). Our aim is for a cooler style of McLaren Vale Shiraz due to the heightened elevation and leaner, mineral soil profile of these sites, lower yielding and freshened by the maritime breezes from the Gulf St. Vincent. All vineyards are certified sustainable by Sustainable Winegrowing Australia. 

The Shiraz fruit was all picked in individual blocks, based on our decisions in the vineyard for components in the wine, between the 4th of March (McLaren Hills) and the 5th of April (Hillenvale). Parcels were vinified separately using traditional techniques until final blending. Whole berry, wild yeast, cool fermentation in open stainless (8-10 days), gently pressed to tank where the free run juice and (80%) pressings were combined. Transferred to 3-4-year-old French Oak puncheons for 12 months, then racked and the final blend was done, returned for 3 months to mesh before bottling, following a micro screen filtration, on August 18, 2023. This wine is sealed under Stelvin screwcap. Certified Carbon Neutral, Certified Sustainable Winegrowing Australia, vegan-friendly wine.
