The fruit here is sourced from the estate’s ‘Blind Spot’ vineyard which is found in the Blewitt Springs sub-region of McLaren Vale. The vines are half a century in age. Fermentation in stainless steel open fermenters, with a total of 14% whole bunches, ten days on skins. 40% of the wine stayed in stainless steel, with the majority transferred to older French oak for ten months maturation. Dark purple in colour, this is an earthy, savoury style. Notes of red fruits, soy, licorice, smoked meats and raspberries. The texture is supple and there is a mix of tannins, such as seems not uncommon for this variety, with both silky and sandy. Coffee grinds start to emerge on the palate too. This is very good length here, in what is a terrific drink for any time over the next eight to ten years. Cracking value.

Sourced from 50-year-old vines from the proprietary Blind Spot vineyard in Blewitt Springs. Sand over ironstone. This transparent, bright and effusively flavoured grenache offers exceptional value. The caveat, perhaps, is the eucalyptus that dries out the finish slightly. Otherwise, kirsch, Seville orange, purple pastille, thyme and briar. A regalia of tannic detail and chewy nourishment at the finish.

There’s a bit of a gum leaf/aniseed edge here, over juicy raspberry flavour. It has freshness and energy, a stony feel, plenty of crunch and vigour, and spicy leafy finish of good length, albeit a little scratchy and drying. Good though.
