Macerated raspberries combine with wild roses and crushed chalk in this evocative wine that captivates from the first sniff. Mixed cherries emerge on the palate, dusted with anise, licorice and savory herbs, wrapping up with superfine tannins that build to an extended finish that I wish would never end.

The Pio Cesare 2019 Barolo Mosconi (with 6,685 bottles and larger formats on the market) offers the structure and length of Nebbiolo from Monforte d'Alba. You also get a salty mineral tone or rusty iron that frames a core of wild berry and blackcurrant. The Mosconi always appears very linear and direct to me, and that special sharpness is what I like best about this vintage.

Bright, shiny ruby red. Mysterious and gorgeous nose, first on cold black tea, then subtle earthy notes, following onto mint, cinchona bark, then forest berries and raspberries. On the palate, plenty of tannins, with a remarkable structure, building in layers like a pyramid, aristocratic earthy notes on the finish, long and lingering.

Black fruit, tobacco, mint, sage and sweet cherry, praline, subtle spiced oak influence. Pulls more to red fruit to taste, juicy cherry and raspberry, a stony character to tannin, bright ‘mineral’ acidity, almost a blueberry muffin sort of thing on a finish of excellent length. A very specific wine. And very good.

The 2019 Barolo Mosconi is a terrific wine from this site. Rich and explosive, the 2019 offers plenty of Mosconi intensity along with the more classic sense of structure that is now a house signature. Dark red fruit, sage, blood orange, tobacco and cedar are all beautifully amplified in this dramatic, full-throttle Barolo.
