Tasting Notes

Deep crimson red. On the nose varietal cassis and blueberry fruits with spicy cedar oak. A classic Coonawarra Cabernet with depth, poise and polish. Expect rich cassis, blackcurrant and dark brambly fruit, layered with cedar, mint, subtle eucalypt and fine oak spice. The palate is structured but smooth, with velvety tannins, excellent length and a composed, cellar-worthy finish.

Product Highlights

This is one of Coonawarra’s proper heritage names. The estate traces its roots back to 1893, and some of those early vines are still producing today.

The winery itself began in 1966 with an antique basket press, a must pump and four concrete fermenters. Humble tools, serious legacy.

Today, this wine sits at the very top of the tree. It is the winery’s flagship Cabernet, sourced from the “number one block” of Cabernet Sauvignon, planted in 1971 on Coonawarra’s famous terra rossa soils beside the township.

That is what makes it so compelling. This is not just “a good Coonawarra Cab”. It is old-vine fruit from a specific 1971-planted block, in one of Australia’s great Cabernet regions, from an estate with vineyard history going back more than 130 years. Just four rows of fruit, from a plot James Halliday once described as Coonawarra Cabernet at “the head of the class”.

In the glass, it is exactly where you want mature Coonawarra Cabernet to be. Think blackcurrant, cassis, dark brambly fruit, cedar, mint and eucalypt, with fine oak and polished tannins. There is a delicious richness too - chocolate and mint patties, mulberry swirl, dark cacao and cassis - all wrapped up with toasty cedar oak, lively French oak integration, velvety tannins and a long, composed finish.
