Cabernet Franc is a robust red grape that originally came from France, but is now grown worldwide, including in places like Australia, Canada, Italy & the USA. Cab Franc is also the parent grape to Merlot & Cabernet Sauvignon and is often used to blend with these two grapes to make a typical Bordeaux-style red wine.
What Does Cabernet Franc Taste Like?
In the vineyard, it is very similar to Cab Sav. However, it ripens usually a week or so earlier, meaning it thrives in cooler climates.
So what does it taste and smell like? On the nose, you can expect bramble & berries, and a little bit of capsicum. It’s a dry wine, with a medium body, relatively high tannins and high acidity. Enjoy flavours of raspberry and red plum, with definite stoney/graphite notes in there too.
What does it pair well with?
Food match: Anything with a sauce that is high in acidity, so tomato-based pizza or pasta or American smoky BBQ.
