Tumbarumba is nestled in the magnificent alpine wilderness of the Snowy Mountains. The region’s vineyards are surrounded by high country sheep stations and crystal rivers brimming with trout. Sweeping panoramic vistas take in the steep green valleys of mountain ash, eucalypt and sugar pine trees. The district has a reputation for ultra premium sparkling wine and specialist, cool climate styles of pinot noir and chardonnay.
The charming village of Tumbarumba is situated 500km south west of Sydney and 80km north of Australia’s tallest peak, Mt Kosciuszko. Tumbarumba’s first vineyards were established in 1982 and now span over 300 ha. The region benefits from long sunshine hours and the coolest wine growing climate in NSW. It is a landscape of crisp mountain air and magical winter snows in the foothills of the Alps. Elevations range from 300-800 metres and mountain soils are formed from granite and basalt.
The Snowy Mountains hydro-electric scheme is amongst the largest and most complex water engineering projects in the world. It comprises 16 dams and 7 power stations spanning 225km of pipeline to supply vital agricultural water and almost 10% of New South Wales’ electricity.
