Blackwood Valley is a young wine region of rolling hills and vines set against charming rural forest and farmland. The region is known for distinctly peachy, tropical chardonnay and plump, multi award winning cabernet sauvignon. Spicy shiraz is becoming an important variety. Sauvignon blanc shows varietal herbaceous and vegetal notes.
The Blackwood Valley wine region was developed in the 1970s in response to viticulture recommendations posed by department of Agriculture reports. It is one of six regions in the South West Australia zone. The new wine growing area now has over 600 ha of vineyard. Blackwood Valley is an inland district, surrounded by the Manjimup, Geographe and Great Southern wine regions. Centred around the municipality of Bridgetown, the Blackwood River flows through the heart of the region. The Valley benefits from a continental climate of warm dry summers and cool, wet winters. Soils consist of well drained gravel, alluvials and gravelly loams with slight elevations ranging from 100-340 metres.
