The family owned and operated Langmeil Winery was one of the Barossa’s original village settlements. Established in 1842, by Blacksmith Christian Auricht, the site was home to a bakery, smithy, butcher's shop, cobbler and 1 hectare of Shiraz. This vineyard, still in use today, has been called the Freedom 1843 block and is believed to be one of the oldest Shiraz vineyards in the world.
Who owns Langmeil Winery?
Flash forward 160+ years, the Langmeil Winery and vineyard is back in family hands, with Carl Lindner, Richard Lindner and Chris Bitter now owning this historic Barossan estate. With a history spanning back six-generations in farming, food, community and wine, the Lindner family are committed to the preservation of its old vines.
What wines are Langmeil known for?
Like many Barossan estates with a bent for traditional full bodied reds, Langmeil prefers open fermenters and basket presses, utilising these fabulously archaic methods for over half its grape intake of approximately 1000 tonnes.
In a similar vein, the wines are only minimally handled and filtered before bottling in an attempt to preserve natural flavour, complexity and guarantee longevity.
Shiraz
Langmeil Winery’s flagship Shiraz, Freedom 1843, is a testament to the Lindner family’s dedication to old vine preservation and winemaking. This one acre of dry-grown vines are believed to be the oldest surviving Shiraz in the world. From 100 year old vines, the Pure Eden Shiraz, is a recent acquisition to Langmeil’s old vine vineyard registry and one worth trying.
Cabernet Sauvignon
Despite having less fame in the Barossa, the Lindner family have been able to capture the hallmarks of the region’s rich viticultural landscape with one acre of Cabernet Sauvignon planted in the 1960s. The Jackaman’s vineyard is home to Langmeil’s finest and rarest Cabernet Sauvignon - named after Barossan, Arthur Jackaman, a World War 2 paratrooper.
Grenache
The Barossa is home to some of the world’s oldest Grenache and Langmeil showcases the versatility of this varietal as a blend in their Three Gardens GSM and its complexity with old vine Grenache.
