David Hook has now spent over 25 years growing grapes and making wine in the Hunter Valley with a stint at Tyrrell's and Lake's Folly on the resume and a - now 25 year old - vineyard in the (unofficial) Hunter Valley subregion of Belford. Hook has also done a few vintages as a 'flying winemaker', ratcheting up harvests in Bordeaux, the Rhone Valley, Spain, the US and Georgia.
David Hook Vineyards
As mentioned David Hook's vineyards are located in Belford, a subregion particularly noted for it's juxtaposition of light sandy and rich red clay loam soils, producing wines that range from classically elegant and perfumed right through to hearty and full flavoured. To supplement this fruit, David sources fruit from the NSW Central Ranges/Orange, though the mainstay of the label will continue to be the Belford sourced fruit.
David Hook Wine Styles
The range is essentially split into two levels - the standard David Hook wines and the 'old vine' Pothana wines. It is the base range that is the most eclectic, encompassing everything from Hunter Pinot Grigio, Viognier and off dry Semillon right through Orange Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling and then into Hunter Barbera, Shiraz, Merlot and even Hunter Pinot Noir! The Pothana wines are much more traditional Hunter styles including old vine Semillon, Chardonnay and Shiraz
