Clementines, red fruit, sandalwood and floral notes, with a delicate, harmonious interplay between tender fruit and precise tannins. Really subtle, showing a detailed equilibrium from this famed vineyard in Serralunga. Approachable now but will surely improve. Better in 2028.

The Massolino 2022 Barolo Margheria raises the intensity a notch after the Parussi. From a vineyard purchased by the Massolino family in 1970 and first bottled separately in 1985, Margheria is known for its finesse and minerality, although the warm 2022 vintage leans toward greater richness and power. The wine delivers a darker quality of fruit with mulberry and blackcurrant, followed by ferrous notes, tar and tobacco. There is more concentration through the mid-palate, yet the fruit never tips into over-ripeness, a testament to the estate's thoughtful handling of this challenging growing season. Produced from just 1.5 hectares, approximately 4,700 bottles were made.

The 2021 wines from Massolino a very hard act to follow, but the 2022 wines are pretty impressive and offer freshness and more open-knit approachability. Lovely perfume here, red fruits, spice and mint. Very fine and balanced, a gentle grip to tannin, almond and quiet succulence, red fruits, dried herb, a cool feel to acidity, with a long clean finish. Stylish, finely wrought, almost pretty, with crispness and energy a theme. Excellent.

The 2022 Barolo Margheria is laced with dark red fruit, iron, mint, white pepper, slate and dried herbs. As always, the Margheria presents a decidedly savory, mineral-driven side of Barolo and Serralunga. Beams of tannin kick up the mid-palate through to the long, sustained finish. There are no hard edges or awkward contours here.
