Tasting Notes

The result is a rich, powerful red with just a touch of sweetness that makes the tiny price tag hard to believe. Expect loads of black cherry, plum and warm spice, wrapped up in a smooth, velvety palate. The tannins are soft, the finish lingers, and there’s enough Amarone-like swagger here to make you look twice at the price.

Product Highlights

Opening this Biscardo Neropasso poses a question - why stick to drinking the same $20 or $30 Australian Shiraz or Cabernet when you can sample some unique and delicious alternative reds with real character and affordability?

It starts in Verona, northern Italy, where the Biscardo family have been making wine for 150 years. More than just the home of Romeo & Juliet, this part of the world is famous for a very unusual red wine style known as Amarone. Made via the 'appasimento' method (whereby grapes are picked and then sent to a drying room for up to 90 days to concentrate the flavours) they are magnificent, powerful and famously long lived reds, and one of the world's most fascinating things to drink.

The only problem? Amarone is expensive.

The solution? Neropasso!

Colloquially known as baby Amarone the grapes in Neropasso - a blend of Corvinone, Corvina and Cabernet Sauvignon - are dried for less time, resulting in a slightly juicer and approachable wine.

Still with the swagger and power of Amarone (which is typically 15% alcohol and impossibly full-bodied) this is one for anyone who likes South Australian Shiraz.

You deserve a little more Italian flavour in your drinking diet...

Very disappointing

"Whilst usually a fan of italian reds, this seems to have an unfortunate aftertaste reminiscent of cloves that was quite unpleasant. Not recommended"

A Good Value Italian Red

"I've enjoyed the first bottle of this wine, berry and choc flavours and a richness that will develop over 3-5 years in the cellar."

Neropasso Biscardo

"Excellent Wine From Valpolicella area in Verona, Italy, land of Romeo and Juliet, reflect the purity of the surrounding area near the castles, with flavours that dictate the perfume of cherries, plums, figs, and olive leaves. Lovely, full, rounded body. Beautiful combination with food such as red meat and ragù pasta. Fantastic smell, velvet red bright colour, and long persistency in the palate. I’ve been buying it every time is available. When open 12 hours before serving, express is full joy and complexity. Great to drink with friends and for presents. Luca Roncari"
