If the 2024 Pitchfork Chardonnay was maybe a bit anodyne, this Cab Merlot from the excellent 2023 vintage makes up for it. Ripe dark fruit, dark chocolate, a little bay leaf and spice. It’s medium-bodied, has some fleshiness to it, blueberry and blackberry, a fine powdery grip to tannin, with a dark chocolate finish of solid length. It’s quite ripe, but does have some regional perfume and character. This does the job admirably well for a wine at this price point.

Flavours of cassis and blackberries come infused with bay leaves, wintergreen and tomato leaves, an appealing roasted tomato note, too. It’s an easy-drinking style yet with pleasantly drying tannins and freshness throughout; it’s a good value drink.
